Choosing the right skilled nursing facility for a loved one is an incredibly difficult choice. There is so much to consider, ranging from the patient’s needs and abilities, to the location of the facility in relation to the patient as well as other family members, the level of care that the facility provides and the cost. The list goes on and on.

In addition to all of the above, one important factor to consider is the facility’s record. Even if a skilled facility has reasonable cost and is in a desirable location, its record for quality care and safety must be considered. Pro Publica has put together a survey of the fine assessed (as well payment suspensions) for skilled facilities in each of the 50 states.

The survey shows that Texas had the 4th highest number of serious deficiencies per nursing home.  Additionally, Texas ranked a dubious number 1 in payment suspensions, with 239 facilities affected by suspensions. That said, there are many facilities in Texas (including some in this area) without a single reported fine.
